Sophie the Giraffe was born in France on the 25th of May 1961. Back in those days, the only animal toys available were farm animals, hence why Monsieur Rampeau, an expert in transforming sap from the Hevea tree into rubber, came up with the idea of designing the first wildlife-figure on the market.
Sophie, who back in the 60s looked exactly the same as she does today, was an immediate success. Young mothers recognized her as a definite must for their children. Made of flexible, 100% natural rubber (derived from the Hevea tree), Sophie is the perfect product to sooth a baby’s irritated gums during teething process.
Today, Sophie the Giraffe is still “traditionally” produced, a process that involves more than 14 manual operations.
